brillhint sneaker with an aptitude lor relating oc currences with such vividness that bls congregation follow the Intent of his re marks with pleasuic There is no cursing of the drunkard nor any picture held out to the people that the drunkard la a brute While he employs several of the usual temperance arguments be avoids making his arguments obnoxious to the drunkard but points the true road to sobriety with enticing and alluring arguments replete with Interesting Illustrations The usual cursing of saloon keepers was also missed He says there is no true preaching with out acting and gave illustrations ot the good accomplished by tho Hqward Mis sion of New York Take a drunkard hungry out of work and no money and hit him on the stomach with a ten cent loaf ot bread and the reverened gentle man thinks it is better argument than all the tracts you can give him lie says tracts may bo very good but they will not satisfy the pangs and gripings of the empty stomach He believes In allowing to the drunkard there Is earnest action ns well as to continually harp at him with temperance arguments He then related lie history of a young Englishman who had caused Ids parents many years of sorrow by his wild career After following a life of dissipation tor years the young man enlisted in the Eng glisli army for India aud served tive years In that foreign laud He wrote to his father he was reformed and beseeelied him to purchase his discharge This was done and the young man was taken home re formed and was started into the luerean tdc business He held up manfully for six months at the end of which time lieattended a social party and a young lady challenged him to drink her health The challenge was accepted and the fatal drink passed through the young man's Ups Three days after that he was a common drunkard and pursued his downward career with lightning speed Ills busi ness failed and part ot his time was passed in the gutters of London At last he made another elfort and his fattier gave him $3000 in gold and he started lor America lie landed in New York and his new formed resolves vanished from his milid aud he re entered on his dissipated career In three weeks his money was squandered and he then for the first time in his life realized he was a stranger in a strange land without any friends lle sought work as a clerk errand boy or anything but died He then went to work at manual labor In Castle Garden and work ed for two months at the end of which time lie had $90 Ills past history availed him nothing aud in two days lie did not have a cent of the $90 Winter was at hand work ceased he was driven out ot his boarding house and was compelled to lodge in a police station There he viewed the life of the criminal and for the hun dredth time he resolved to reform He was offered his breakfist by the Howard Mission he accepted and while he was there he related Ills life's history The reverened gentlemen took a great interest in The ragged aud forlorn Englishman tmd they gave him employment But ttiat same night an eminent temperance lec turer referred to the incident of the morn ing and the audience called for the young I man The young man went forward and gave his history aud this was the first lecture of the Bev 11 Pogson and lie startled bis hearers' by stating that the I young Englishman was no other than 1 himself In 1867 he was a drunkard to dav lie is an emineutminister and lecturer His lecture to night will be delivered in the Congregational church and the subject announced is: Warefare Our The lecturer is able and eloquent and there was nothing in his re marks la night that would offend a saloon keeper or a drunkard The Temple of Honor hired Bev son to deliver live lectures for $80 and last night a collection was taken
