Market lower; early gains erased NEW YORK (UPI) The stock market erased early gains and turned lower at midday in moderate trading activity. The Dow Jones industrial average, which fell 3.51 Tuesday, was down 4.79 to 1903.82 at noon EST. Two hours earlier, the Dow had been up more than 4 points. The New York Stock Exchange index was off 0.19 to 138.93. The price of an average share was down 19 cents.
Losers led gainers 779-642 among the 1,929 issues crossing the NYSE tape. The market made modest gains in early trading, but when stock index futures contracts began trading at a discount to their indexes, professional traders bought the futures and sold the cash equities. Lower stock index futures prices tend to reflect investors' expectations that stock prices will trend lower. "It's an unusual day; the markets are a hodge-podge," Jon Groveman, head of equity trading at Ladenburg, Thalmann said. Bond were higher, even though the dollar was lower and gold prices were ahead.
A weak dollar and rising commodity prices usually hurt the inflation-fearful bond market. "The only thing to say is what people have been saying ad nauseum: we have to wait to see what happens after the first of the year," Groveman said. "With taxlaw selling out of the way, the market will have no excuses."
